Nokia was first established as a pulp mill in 1865, founded by Fredrik Idestamll in the town of Tampere, Finland.

The company was named Nokia after the nearby river, and it gradually expanded into the production of rubber products and electricity generation. In 1967, Nokia merged with Finnish Cable Works and Finnish Rubber Works to form the Nokia Corporation. 

The company diversified into various industries, including consumer electronics and telecommunications. In the 1980s, Nokia became one of the leading manufacturers of mobile phones. Its first mobile phone, the Mobira Cityman, was released in 1987 and was the first mobile phone to be commercially available.

Throughout the 1990s, Nokia continued to innovate and dominate the mobile phone market. Its phones were known for their durability, long battery life, and ease of use. 

However, Nokia's dominance in the mobile phone market began to decline in the 2000s.

Because of this, Nokia's market share began to decline as competitors like Samsung and Apple gained popularity. 

In 2011, Nokia and Microsoft teamed together to market phones running the Windows operating system. However, this partnership was short-lived, and Nokia eventually sold its phone business to Microsoft in 2014. 

Following this, Nokia shifted its focus towards providing telecommunications equipment and services, becoming a leader in the development of 5G technology.

The history behind the 5 logo changes Nokia have made in 150 years

 

The original logo, featuring a salmon fish from the Nokianvirta River, which pictured a fish supposed to be the salmon fish of Nokianvirta River, the logo first appeared in 1866 and remained virtually unchanged for around a century. 

In 1965, the logo was modernised, becoming more transparent and minimalist, this logo stayed with the brand for almost seventy years, being the longest-used logo in the company’s history.

However, a year later, Nokia introduced a new black-and-white logo featuring the company's name in a round shape.

After merging with Finnish Cable Works and Finnish Rubber Works in 1966, Nokia unveiled its 'Arrows' logo, which was similar to the current logo but featured a different typeface, a lighter shade of blue, and an arrow image. 

The logo was slightly modified in 1992 when the 'Connecting People' slogan was introduced using the 'Nokia Sans' typeface created by Erik Spiekermann. In 2006, Nokia made minor changes to the logo's type and colour, and in 2011, the company removed the slogan altogether.

Having successfully completed the initial phase, Nokia is now shifting its attention to accelerating its growth, by introducing Nokia´s New Logo, the first such change in 60 years.
